Research funding
Te Toi Whakaruruhau periodically releases funding for small disaster resilience development and research projects that may enhance the capability of Māori communities. There is a small amount of funding available to support new initiatives and hapū and Iwi trusts are invited to contact Te Toi Whakaruruhau to discuss their particular needs in this regard. 2024 Investment Round
MBIE are holding their virtual roadshows for the 2024 investment round on the 2, 10 and 11 October 2023. This virtual roadshow will provide information on both the Smart Ideas and Research Programmes funding mechanisms.
Each roadshow is 2 hours long and consists of a 1 hour webinar presentation from MBIE, followed by a 1 hour Q&A.
This is a free to attend event, however numbers are limited so please register through one of the links below.
There are three time options:
Roadshow 1: Monday, 2 Oct 2023: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Roadshow 2: Tuesday, 10 Oct 2023: 1.00 pm – 3:00 pm
Roadshow 3: Wednesday, 11 Oct 2023: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
The webinar presentation will be recorded and uploaded on the MBIE website for those who are unable to participate at the roadshows.
Vision Mātauranga Capability Fund (VMCF)
This year’s VMCF round is now open. Te Pūnaha Hihiko: Vision Mātauranga Capability Fund aims to strengthen capability, capacity, skills and networks between Māori and the science and innovation system and increase under-standing of how research can contribute to the aspirations of Māori organisations and deliver benefit for Aotearoa. For more information and funding documentation see the MBIE website. Proposals are due via the IMS portal.
Applications close 12 noon on the 11th October 2023.

Applications for MBIE’s Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellowships are currently open. The objective of the Fellowship is to invest in Māori and Pacific Peoples to establish careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research and to grow the network of Māori and Pacific Peoples in the research, science and innovation (RSI) system.
